About this Workshop
Research shows that happiness isn’t just about feeling good in the moment—it helps us thrive in many areas of life. Studies have found that happier people tend to have stronger friendships, perform better in school, and recover more quickly from challenges. Learning the “science of happiness” gives participants practical tools—like gratitude, kindness, and optimism—that boost well-being and reduce stress. By understanding how our brains and habits shape happiness, workshop participants can build confidence and resilience that will support them now and into the future.
This 2.5-hour workshop offers a supportive and engaging environment designed to help middle-schoolers:
Understand key scientific principles behind lasting happiness
Identify personal strengths and how to use them to navigate challenges
Build emotional resilience through gratitude, mindfulness, and positive reframing
Strengthen social-emotional skills by planning a way to spread happiness to others
Gain basic research skills by designing and conducting a mini happiness survey
Create a personalized action plan to maintain and grow their happiness
Take ownership of their mental well-being through self-reflection and intentional practices
In advance of the workshop, each participant will complete the VIA Strength Survey for Children (www.authentichappiness.org). Parents may need to help their child create an account and take the survey.
During the session, participants will:
Learn what researchers have found really brings people joy
Practice skills that increase happiness, such as gratitude journaling, mindfulness, and positive reframing
Reflect on their strengths and how they can be used to face challenges
Identify and plan one way they can spread happiness to an important person in their life
Design a happiness experiment to survey what makes those around them happy
Create a Personalized Happiness Action Plan based on the data they have gathered
Details:
Light snacks and beverages will be provided
Payment is required to reserve a spot
There are limited adult volunteer needs in this workshop - if you are interested in volunteering for the duration of the workshop, please indicate that in your registration form.
If your child is a Girl Scout interested in earning the “Science of Happiness” badge, we will assign them homework to complete post-workshop. After their assignments are completed, they can provide proof to their Troop Leader and receive their badge.
